Braided Packing Construction

Cross Section:      Braided or plaited sections can be formed square or round. A lubricant impregnated section can be formed into a square section by passing it through a roller-die.
   Your choices are...

   Square Cross Section

   Round Cross Section

Search Logic:      All products with ANY of the selected attributes will be returned as matches. Leaving all boxes unchecked will not limit the search criteria for this question; products with all attribute options will be returned as matches.
   Cross Sectional Size:

Most packings are made in a standard range of section sizes from 6mm (1/4 inch) square upwards.

Search Logic:      User may specify either, both, or neither of the "At Least" and "No More Than" values. Products returned as matches will meet all specified criteria.
   Construction:
   Your choices are...

   Braid-Over-Braid

This construction is also called jacket-over-jacket. The design is fabricated by braiding one or more covers over a center core of braided, twisted or homogeneous materials. This design can be braided round, then calendared square. The weave is soft and dense because of individual jacket-over-jacket construction and can carry high amount of lubricant.

   Braid-Over-Core

This design is produced by round braiding one or more jackets of yarn, rovings, ribbons or other forms of materials over a core, that may be extruded, twisted, wrapped or knitted.

   Laminated

Either asbestos and rubber or duck and rubber are laminated into slab form and then fabricated into spirals, coils or rings.

   Multi-Braid or Lattice

In this design, strands are diagonally braided for greater strength and longer life. Each strand passes diagonally through the body of the packing at an angle of approximately 45°. The design is resistant to permeation leakage and would not be damaged entirely even if the surface gets worn.

   Plaited

Plaited packings are constructed from interwoven yarns with pockets formed between each plait to retain lubricant.

   Square-Braid

The square cross-section structure is soft and absorbent and can carry a high amount of lubricant. The design is especially suited for high-speed rotary service, particularly at low pressure. Note: square braid is also called plaited by some manufacturers.

   Twisted

In this simple design, yarns or metallic strands are twisted around each other to obtain the desired size. One packing size can be used for various size stuffing boxes. This is primarily a general utility or emergency type of packing where packing space is small.

Features

   A Loose Packing?

Loose packings are generally used for sealing pump glands or valves and are easy to fit. They only have to be tapped lightly to pack the gland. Typically, end rings of solid section or split rings of solid packing are used to prevent extrusion of the loose packing.

Search Logic:      "Required" and "Must Not Have" criteria limit returned matches as specified. Products with optional attributes will be returned for either choice.
   A Preformed Ring?

Many compression packing materials can be supplied in a pre-compressed ring form. Flexible graphite tape can be supplied as preformed rings.

Search Logic:      "Required" and "Must Not Have" criteria limit returned matches as specified. Products with optional attributes will be returned for either choice.
Material and Lubrication

Material Classification:      Yarn packings are usually combined with a lubricant. The amount of lubricant required varies with the type of service. A packing used for high-speed rotary motion would normally be of a softer material type to maintain flexibility over time and contain a large amount of lubricant, while a packing used for static applications would not normally contain lubricant.
   Your choices are...

   Acrylic

Synthetic yarns are used to upgrade performance characteristics. Acrylic is good for use in low temperature general service with slightly acidic fluids.

   Alumina Silicate

Exhibits good performance in extremely high temperature service but is limited to static seals or slow movements.

   Aluminum

Metallic packings are fabricated from specially treated, lubricated metal foil ribbons. They are available in the form of spiral-wrap packings, folded / twisted packings or wrapped around a resilient core.

   Aramid

Fibers of aromatic polyamides, aramids, have excellent resistance to high temperatures and exceptional tensile strength.

   Asbestos

Asbestos yarns are the traditional choice for higher temperature services.

   Carbon

Made from carbon yarns, these pitch-based yarns have life expectancies and thermal characteristics not found in other products. They also have low friction coefficients for less shaft wear.

   Ceramic

Ceramic fibers have better temperature and chemical resistance properties than asbestos but are not easily formed into braided or plaited packings.

   Copper

Metallic packings are fabricated from specially treated, lubricated metal foil ribbons. They are available in the form of spiral-wrap packings, folded / twisted packings or wrapped around a resilient core.

Cotton and flax are the most widely used fibers.

   FDA Approved PTFE

FDA approved PTFE filament for use in food processing industry.

   Fiberglass

Glass fibers have excellent thermal properties, dimensional stability and tensile strength. They will not burn and dissipate heat faster than organic fibers.

   Flax

Long-fiber roving yarns that are braided and impregnated with lubricant.

   GFO®

     A trademark of WL Gore.

   Graphite

Braided from high purity graphite filaments, these filaments have excellent chemical resistance, are thermally conductive and can be used in extreme temperatures and pressures.

   Graphite / Asbestos

Newer graphitized asbestos packings with superior lubrication provide cooler running and lower friction with excellent high temperature performance.

   Hemp

Hemp is another widely used fiber, but to a lesser extent than cotton or flax.

   Inconel® Wire Reinforced

A registered trademark of Inco Alloys International, Inc.

   Leather

A traditional packing used in low and medium pressure reciprocating motion applications.

Service Limits

   Shaft Speed:

For pumps or rotating machinery applications with slow or infrequent shaft motion, compression packings are required to seal without leaking. Higher speed shaft applications require some fluid leakage for heat dissipation and lubrication, but must be controlled.

   Alternate Shaft or Rubbing Speed:

Speed expressed as linear distance per time.

Search Logic:      User may specify either, both, or neither of the "At Least" and "No More Than" values. Products returned as matches will meet all specified criteria.
   Operating Pressure:

To keep the packing "dry" the radial pressure on the inner ring must be at least equal to the internal pressure. Some leakage past the rings may be desirable.
