Wheel End and Oil Bath Seals

About Wheel End and Oil Bath Seals

Wheel end seals and oil bath seals are used to seal heavy vehicle wheels. Wheel end seals and oil bath seals prevent oil leakage from oil bath hubs and ensure that the wheel bearings stay lubricated, reducing the need to repack or replace wheel bearings. Vehicles equipped with oil bath hubs have caps on the axle that allow personnel to view the oil level. Any oil leakage indicates that the wheel end seal or oil bath seal needs to be replaced.

Wheel end seals and oil bath seals are composed of rubber or a blend of rubber and metal. Some seals are also manufactured with polymers or Teflon, a popular type of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Teflon is a registered trademark of DuPont Dow Elastomers, LLC. Teflon seals have a bi-directional sealing lip that ensures a tight fit to the wheel assembly and provides a wide rim that stays in contact with the wheel to absorb wheel movement and compensate for improperly-adjusted bearings or an uneven spindle surface. The seals are constructed with a convoluted labyrinth system to keep out dust and other contaminants.
