Shoulder Screws

Shoulder screws are fasteners with an unthreaded shank. The unthreaded shank is long when compared to its threaded portion, which is located under the head. Shoulder screws can be used to attach one machine part to another, or as a plain bearing in places where rotary or sliding motion is required. Shoulder screws can be made from steel or stainless steel, and are often heat-treated with a black oxide finish. There are two basic head styles: hex and slotted. Shoulder screw dimensions are measured in millimeters (mm) or inches (in), and carry lettered designations such as A (nominal), B (shoulder), C (diameter), D (head length), E (thread size), and F (thread length). Key size, weight, and thread size are important parameters to consider when selecting shoulder screws.

Although suppliers of shoulder screws use different naming conventions, there are several basic types of products. Examples include locating screws, socket shoulder screws, stripper bolts, socket head shoulder screws, and swing bolts or latch bolts. Other types of shoulder screws may also be available. Locating screws are used to mount locating cylinders on a fixture plate. They are usually ground from alloy steel and have a black oxide finish. Socket shoulder screws provide positive holding power and strong turning leverage. They are suitable for many types of sliding mechanisms, and often include a nylon locking element. Socket shoulder screws are held at much closer tolerances than standards stripper bolts. Other types of shoulder screws may provide other characteristics for specific applications.

Shoulder screws that are made from SAE 4037 alloy steel can be used in punch-press die sets with guides and stripper springs. Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standards apply to aerospace and ground vehicles, and include aerospace standards, aerospace material standards (AMS), and related publications. Typically, SAE 4037 shoulder screws are used to attach rollers, cams, levers and links in mechanical components and systems. They may also be used with components such as pressure pads and stationary guides. Carbon-steel, SAE 4037 shoulder screws provide increased hardness, tensile strength, corrosion resistance, and surface quality. Other types of materials for shoulder screws that can be combined with SAE 4037 include manganese, molybdenum, silicon, sulfur, and phosphorous.
