About Nuts
Nuts are fasteners that are designed to fit around and secure a bolt or screw. The application determines the type of nut to use.
Hex nuts are common fasteners, hexagonal in shape with internal threads. Hex jam nuts and hex machine screw nuts are smaller and thinner than a regular hex nut, accommodating smaller machine screws and bolts. Hex nuts with nylon inserts come with nylon material secured at the top of the nut, to secure the bolt tightly against loosening from vibration. Wing nuts are threaded fasteners with flanges extending from the outside edge of the nut, which enable and operator to turn the nut and tighten it by hand. Cap nuts are closed and rounded at one end, providing a smooth outward finish. Other specialty fastener and bolt configurations include prevailing torque lock nuts, which are non-reversible and used in high-temperature applications, and T-nuts, which are used to fasten wood or composite materials. Nuts come in a variety of materials, including brass, different grades of steel, stainless steel, and chrome.
Lug nuts are specialty heavy duty nuts used to secure a wheel to a car or truck. Different automotive manufacturers often use different types of lug nuts or truck nuts on their vehicles. Lug nuts come in a variety of thread configurations depending on the wheel and are also available in right- or left-handed orientations. A specialty lug nut or truck nut is also known as an acorn nut, which is a type of cap nut that has a decorative or smooth finish.
