SureStep™ stepping system features high performance and torque at a low cost.

Stepper Systems

AutomationDirect offers the SureStep™ family of products, an open-loop stepping system that provides simple and accurate control of position and speed and offers a solution for applications requiring lower power. The SureStep stepping system provides a low-cost, reliable, high quality solution to answer your positioning control needs.

The SureStep family includes four standard motors and a "one-size-fits-all" step motor drive. With holding torques from 83 oz-inch to 434 oz-inch in NEMA size 17, 23 or 34 frames, the motors handle a wide range of automation applications, including woodworking, assembly and test machines. The motors operate on 2.8 A per phase (size 17 motor uses 2.0 A). Their square frame style produces high torque and allows the motors to achieve the best torque-to-volume ratio. All four motors are connectorized for easy hookup.

A 20-foot extension cable with locking connector is a standard option to interface the SureStep motors to the 2-phase microstepping drive. The cable can easily be cut to length if needed. The drive operates any of the four standard motors and features standard +5 VDC optically isolated logic inputs for interfacing with DirectLOGIC PLCs and many other 3rd party controllers/indexers.

A 9-position DIP switch is used to set up the drive; no software or add-on resistors are required for configuration. The DIP switches are used for built-in self test, step angle selection, current level selection and optional idle current reduction.

Step pulses and direction signals from programmable logic controllers (PLCs) or other indexers and motion controllers are "translated" by the microstepping drive into precise movements of the stepping motor shaft. The drive uses advanced microstepping technology with selectable step sizes of 400 steps per revolution (divide by 2), 1,000 steps per revolution (divide by 5), 2,000 steps per revolution (divide by 10) and 10,000 steps per revolution (divide by 50). The 2-phase bipolar motors have 200 full steps per revolution or 1.8 degrees per full step.

A standard 32 VDC, 4-amp linear power supply completes the SureStep line. The power supply operates at least two SureStep stepping systems of any size with an auxiliary +5 VDC regulated supply to facilitate PLC and stepping motor drive interfaces.

Bipolar Stepper Motors (STP-MTR-xxxxx Series)

Open-loop stepping systems provide for simple and accurate control of position and speed where lower power and cost are considerations.

Move commands ("step" and "direction" pulse signals) from the DirectLOGIC family of PLCs or other "indexers" and "motion controllers" are "translated" by the stepping driver into precise movements of the stepping motor shaft. The SureStep™ stepping motors are 2-phase technology with 200 full steps per revolution or 1.8° per full step.

The SureStep stepping family offers four standard motors to handle a wide range of automation applications such as woodworking, assembly, and test machines. Our square frame or "high torque" style stepping motors are the latest technology resulting in the best torque to volume. We have NEMA 17, 23, and 34 mounting flanges and holding torque ranges from 83 oz-in to 434 oz-in. SureStep motors are all four lead bipolar step motors.

The STP-PWR-3204 power supply from AutomationDirect is the best choice to power AutomationDirect and other step motors. The STP-PWR-3204 power supply is designed to work with the AutomationDirect SureStep STP-DRV-4035 bipolar microstepping drive.

SAFETY NOTES: When connecting a step motor to a drive or indexer, be sure that the motor power supply is switched off. Never disconnect the motor while the drive is powered up. Never connect the motor leads to ground or directly to the power supply.

Extension Cable (STP-EXT-020)

A 20 foot extension cable with locking connector is a standard option to interface any of the four stepping motors to the stepping drive. The extension cable can be easily cut-to-length if desired.

Stepper Drive (STP-DRV-4035)

Open-loop stepping systems provide for simple and accurate control of position and speed where lower power and cost are considerations.

Move commands ("step" and "direction" pulse signals) from the DirectLOGIC family of PLCs or other "indexers" and "motion controllers" are "translated" by the stepping driver into precise movement of the stepping motor shaft.

The SureStep™ stepping motors are 2-phase technology with 200 full steps per revolution or 1.8° per full step. Older type stepping drives which operate stepping motors in full step mode can result in stalling or lost motion due to potential problems with low speed mechanical vibration (usually between 100 to 200 RPM). To minimize this vibration problem, the SureStep™ stepping driver uses advanced microstepping technology with selectable step sizes of 400 steps per revolution (÷ 2), 1,000 steps per revolution (÷ 5), 2,000 steps per revolution (÷ 10), and 10,000 steps per revolution (÷ 50).

A SureStep power supply is available which can operate at least two complete SureStep stepping systems and includes an auxiliary +5 VDC supply to facilitate DirectLOGIC PLCs and stepping driver interfaces.

Bipolar Microstepping Drive: One-Size-Fits-All Stepping Driver!

The ultimate in simplicity. One standard driver operates any of the four SureStep stepper motors currently offered.

Features include:

  • Onboard screw terminals for easy hook-up
  • Optically isolated inputs ready for +5 VDC logic from a DirectLOGIC PLC (or other input)
  • No software or add-on resistors needed for configuration - all drive set-up is done with a 9-position dipswitch. The dipswitch is used for the built-in self-test, step angle selection, current level selection, and optional idle current reduction.
  • Power ON red LED indicator
  • Input Power 12-42 VDC (including ripple voltage)
  • Output current selectable from 0.4 to 3.5 Amps/phase motor current (maximum output power is 140 W)
  • Dimensions: 3 x 4 x 1.5 inches
  • Listings: CE (complies with EN55011A and EN50082-1 (1992)

Step Motor Power Supply (STP-PWR-3204) (for STP-DRV-4035 Microstepping Drive)

The STP-PWR-3204 linear power supply from AutomationDirect is a good choice to power the STP-DRV-4035 microstepping drive or other stepping systems.

If the power supply you choose does not have a fuse on the output, you will need to install a 4 amp fast acting fuse on the "+" power supply lead as shown in the product diagram tech specification documents. (Select "Technical Info" tab for this product category).

The step motor power supply can supply up to three (3) SureStep™ STP-DRV-4035 Step Motor Drives depending on step motor size and application requirements.

Power supply features include:

  • Screw terminal AC input and DC output connectors
  • Input Power (fuse protected and switch selectable) 1-phase, 120/240 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 150 VA (± 10%)
  • Motor Supply Output (fuse protected and power on LED indicator) 32 VDC @ 4 Amp at full load (Linear Unregulated) 35 VDC @ 1 Amp load, 41 VDC @ no load.
  • Logic Supply Output (electronically overload protected and power on LED indicator) 5 VDC @ 500 mA (± 5% Regulated)
  • Agency Approvals: UL, CSA, and CE

SAFETY WARNING: Be careful not to reverse the polarity from the power supply to the drive. Reverse connection will destroy your drive and void the warranty.
